Sikkim is in northeast India. It is an integral part of the Himalayas in India and the landscape is dramatic. It also has Kanchenjunga the highest mountain and is bordered by Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan. Sikkim houses alpine meadows has glaciers and wildflowers in abundant varieties. There are Buddhist monasteries and steep paths.

Sikkim has in the north the Tibetan Plateaus in vast stretches, in the east are the Bhutan kingdom and the Tibet Chumbi Valley, in the west is the Nepal Kingdom and in the south is the West Bengal Darjeeling district.

The state has an exotic and rare flora and fauna. It is endowed with 5000 species of plants, primula species, rare orchids, and rhododendron species, making it the leading Northeast state in the production and supply of cut flowers to markets. In fact, of the 6000 medicinal plants, more than 424 plants are from Sikkim.

Tourism in Sikkim emerges as a source of generating revenue. It includes trekking tourism, cultural tourism, homestay, wellness tourism, ecotourism, adventure tourism, flora tourism, and more related to tourism offering the Sikkim tourism trade a boost. The emphasis was on having tourists throughout the year, and not as a season-based endeavor.

Sikkim has installed 743.36 MW of power generation capacity, where state utilities are 412.11 MW, central utilities are 117.57 MW, and the private sector is 213.68 MW. Of the total power generation installed 53.57 MW was thermal contribution and the renewable energy was 56.79 MW. Teesta Urja is a vehicle launched with a special purpose to carry out in North Sikkim a hydropower project of 1200 MW.

The horticulture crops are expected to be 409.57 thousand metric tonnes. The total fruits and vegetable production was estimated at 55.45 and 231.40 thousand metric tonnes. This was owing to the environmental and geographical conditions that are favorable and conducive to floriculture development at higher altitudes. Sikkim is an innovator trying to cultivate Gladiolus, aiming to become the ‘kingdom of flowers.’

List of the state schemes to start a new manufacturing unit 

Sikkim's suitable climate favors horticultural and agricultural products. Sikkim is the best producer of large cardamom and it contributes to more than 80% of the production in India. This state also supports multiple crops such as wheat, rice, barley, millet, pea, urad, mustard, soya bean, and large cardamoms. Sikkim 2019 was declared by UN- FAO as a 100% organic state.

The government of India also launched the North East Industrial Development Scheme, where the new units of Industries are located in the manufacturing and services sectors in the northeast states. They were eligible for many incentives.

  • The Sikkim state minister of civil aviation and tourism is promoting in the state multiple sectors the investments feasibility.
  • The transmission and distribution are approved for Rs.9129.32 crore in 2021 for Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The state receives excise benefits and the pharmaceutical industry is the major play to set up in the state their manufacturing units and to name a few of the pharmaceutical industries are IPCA, Alembic, Unichem, Sun Pharma, Cipla, Torrent Pharmaceuticals, Alkem Lab, Zydus Cadila, and Intas Pharma.
