BANANA FIBRE EXTRACTION AND HAND MADE PAPER

      [EIRI/EDPR/1613] J.C.414

      INTRODUCTION

The use of “Banana” fiber for textile and other purpose as natural material is a new concept for India. However, considerable research work has been done by textile research organizations including BITRA, CITRA, KVIC( Khadi Village Industry Corporation) and NRCB (National Research Centre for Banana-Trichy) and it has been found that banana fiber can be a very promising source of natural

fiber in the coming period. It may be noted that this fiber is already used successfully in Philippines since decades and hence it is also known popularly as “Manila Hemp”. The other name of this fiber is “Abaca”, it belongs to musa sapientum species.

The proposed project envisages setting up of a facility for Banana fiber extraction from waste banana stem, cleaning, grading and converting it up to finished product.

Banana is a gigantic herb and a food fruit crop an ancient species cultivated all over the world. India is a largest Banana producer next to Brazil.

The fruit is a main source of vitamin and protein and the leaves find its application as a bio plates for serving food. The other portions of Banana plant are dumped as waste and is converted as a fibre using fibre extraction machinery.  This process is done only after harvesting the Banana.

In India we have around 5 lakhs hectares of banana cultivation and only 10% of banana waste is extracted as fibre.

Bananas occupy among tropical fruits a position comparable to that of apples among temperate fruits. Musa is the botanical name for bananas. They are grown over wide areas throughout the tropics from 30oN to 30oS of the equator. The major are the caribbean Islands, the central american countries, Eucador, Colombia and Brazil in S. America. The canary islands, Cameroons, Ivory Coast,  Cong and Tanganyika in Africa, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Pilipines in  Asia and a number of Polynesian islands in the pacific.

The banana plant is cultivated mostly in the tropical but situated within the 60oF is others north and south of the equator.

In certain parts of India, in many pacific islands and in tropical of the people. Fresh fruit is later as dessert, while unripe fruit and fruit flour cooking types are eater as vegetable. Fruit pulp is dried and processed into flour or preserved in many forins for Subsequent use.

Banana is a fair source of calcium and iron and a rich source of pottasium, magnesium, sodium and phosphorus. Bananas contain comparatively large  amounts of two physiologically important compounds namely serotonin and norepinephrine in addition to dopamine, 3,4, dihydroxy phenylalamine and an unidentified catecholamiac.

Banana pell is a potential source of pectin. Peels of green, yellow and brown bananas are reported to contain respectively 0.51, 0.38, and 0.46% soluble pectic substances and 1.28, 1.02, and 0.8% total pectic substances.

The skin and pulp of green banana contain antifungal substances, while the  skin and the pulp of the ripe banana contain both antifungal and antibacterial substances.
