INTRODUCTION

Carboxy Methyl Cellulose a chemical of demonstrated usefullness in scores of applications and of suggested applicability in hundreds, nevertheless required several decades to attain genuine industrial status. The product was first developed in Germany toward the end of World War I by Jansen, but it was until the late 1930's and particularly during and since world War II. that large scale uses began to energe & commercial production appeared justified.

Following the appearance of a report, the detergency improving characteristics of SCMC were confirmed in laboratory tests. Extensive investigations were under taken by research groups with a view toward developing a CMC with the high grade soaps and synthetic detergents already available on the market. At the same time production methods were subjected to scruting. CMC had received the impetus necessary for the launching of a new Industrial Chemical & a start had been made toward the development of a process for its manufacture.

Commercially, the term carboxy methyl cellulose is applied to a water-soluble cellulose either which is actually the sodium salt of carboxy methyl cellulose. It is also frequently called cellulose gum, CMC or sodium cellulose from its properties as a protective colloid, thickening agent and film former.

SCMC thickens water solution without precipitation over a pH range of 4 to 12 and does not gel from water solutions upon heating. It is not opted from solution by dilute solution of salts of alkali or alkaline earth metals, it is prepared from solution by strong acid, by salts of amphoter multivalent metals and by salts of heavy metals. The protective colloid properties of SCMC acid in the building or promoting of detergents and in textile sizing. The psycological inertness of SCMC permits its use in food products.

SCMC is made only in relatively low ranges of substitution. AT D.S.K.0.7 to 1.2, it is water soluble, yields clean solution when purified and is opted from solution only by acidification with strong acids to pH 1 to 3 SCMC of D.S. 0.3 to 0.6 is water soluble but is commonly sold in a technical, unpurified form. It is prepared from solution by weak acids at pH 3. At D.S.0.1 to 0.2 it is soluble in 4 to 10% a aqueous NaoH, depending upon the extent of chilling of the solution and in 5 to 8% NhaOH.
