Paint, Pigments, Enamel, Inks, Solvents, Thinners and Varnish

In this section, we shall study the different types of paints and related products.

PAINTS: Paint refers to any kind of pigmented liquid or solid mastic composition that after application of a thin layer of substrate, converts to a solid form. Paints are commonly used to protect color and provide texture to objects. Paints can be purchased in different colors and are of different types – such as synthetic and watercolor. Most paints are oil based or water based – that cure differently as per the ambient temperature of the object that is being painted. Some of the manufacturers are known to use primers so as to maintain appropriate temperatures at all times.

PIGMENTS – Let us move to the next section which is pigment which refers to a colored material that is almost insoluble in water. It needs to be well noted and understood that dyes are organic compounds whereas pigments are kind of inorganic compounds. Pigments include various kinds such as lazuli, lapis, ochre, charcoal, and others.

ENAMEL – refers to a kind of a patient that is used for painting the exterior walls of the house. Furthermore, it is well noted that the acrylic paint is used to paint the interior of the house. This paint is known to take a longer period to dry as compared to acrylic paint. The acrylic paint is a water based paint whereas the enamel paint is an oil based paint.
INK – refers to a kind of a solution or a gel that contains a dye, pigment or a colorant and is used to color surfaces. It needs to be noted well that inks have a number of properties which make it excellent to work as paints. It has immense fluidity as well as intense colors which make it useful for various different applications. Whether you are an expert or just a beginner, it is important to perfect your technique and have the best tips from everyone.

SOLVENT – These refer to solvent based paints which are made of liquefying agents that are known to have chemical reaction with oxygen. The coatings are known to have one or more advantage over the different kinds of water based coatings.  The different examples of paint solvents include – toluene, naphtha, turpentine, acetone, mineral spirits, dimethylformamide, glycol ethers and others. It is important to know the purpose of having a solvent in a paint. Solvents tend to disperse or dissolve various kinds of components used in paint formulation, thereby making paint of the desired consistency. There are two types of solvents – the organic solvents as well as the inorganic solvents.

THINNERS VARNISH – It needs to be well noted and understood that mineral spirits have kind of replaced turpentine as the thinner for varnish. These spirits are known to be distilled from petroleum, are less labor intensive and are also costly tp manufacture in comparison to turpentine.

Thus, through this review, we have been successfully able to study different types of paints, enamels, inks, solvents, thinners, varnishes, and so on.
