NAIL POLISH, LIPSTICKS, NAIL POLISH REMOVER
[EIRI/EDPR/1596] J.C. 396
INTRODUCTION
Unlike many other cosmetics that have a history of hundreds or even thousands of years, nail polish (or lacquer, or enamel) is almost completely an invention of twentieth century technology. Nail coverings were not unknown in ancient times—the upper classes of ancient Egypt probably used henna to dye both hair and fingernails—but essentially, its composition, manufacture and handling reflect developments in modern chemical technology.
Modern nail polish is sold in liquid form in small bottles and is applied with a tiny brush. Within a few minutes after application, the substance hardens and forms a shiny coating on the fingernail that is both water- and chip-resistant. Generally, a coating of nail polish may last several days before it begins to chip and fall off. Nail polish can also be removed manually by applying nail polish "remover," a substance designed to break down and dissolve the polish.
Nail Polish:-
Nail polishes nail enamels or nail lacquers are coloured or colourless and/or pearly viscous liquid, composed of nitrocellulose, synthetic resins, plasticizers and organic solvents. In addition they include suitable pigments as colouring agents. The synthetic resins used for the purpose often include polyvinyl acetate, sulphonamide formaldehyde etc. The solvents used are generally esters, ketones, primary alcohols, aromatic hydrocarbons, etc. and their mixtures. Some nail polishes contain a small percentage of guanine crystals (natural pearl essence) extracted from the scales of some species of fish, or bismuth oxychloride or titanium dioxide deposited on mica.
Nail polish is the most important preparation in the group of nail care products. The popularity of nail polish as measured in consumption levels is identical to that of lipstics. Nail polish colour follows fashion trends, as well as making lipstick colour. It gives some indications of the progress of this type of preparation from the transparent uncoloured or pale pink natural colours, which were the only ones tolerated at one time, to the vivid shades and even bizarre colours now accepted as a most essential part of modern beauty.
The consumption of lipsticks in the make up preparation field exceeds any other product. Rather than decreasing in use they pose increasing popularity. No substitute has been found to replace them.
Lipsticks consists of colouring agents dissolved in a suitable perfumed combination of fatty bodies, the raw materials used consists of fats, oils & waxes, dyestuffs, perfume oils and at times other additives to impart special properties.
