Neem oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the fruits and seeds of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica), an evergreen tree native to the Indian subcontinent and widely cultivated in tropical regions. It is one of the most commercially important neem-based products, with applications in organic farming, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, personal care, and other industrial sectors.
The oil is obtained by crushing and pressing neem seed kernels followed by purification of the extract. Neem oil characteristics vary in color from golden yellow to dark brown and it has a strong distinctive odor due to the presence of complex compounds. It mainly consists of triglycerides, fatty acids, sterols, and bioactive triterpenoids such as azadirachtin and nimbin, which contribute to its insecticidal, antiseptic, antifungal, and other functional properties.
Neem trees are widely available across India, particularly in regions such as Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. Increasing utilization of non-edible oils for industrial and pharmaceutical purposes has enhanced the economic importance of neem oil. The oil contains major fatty acid components including oleic acid, stearic acid, and palmitic acid, along with other bioactive constituents responsible for its unique applications. Neem oil production involves systematic collection, processing, extraction, and refining of neem seeds to obtain value-added products for multiple industries.
