Bamboo pulp manufacturing is an important segment of the pulp and paper industry, which supports mass communication, education, packaging, and industrial and economic development. Bamboo belongs to the grass family Poaceae and is valued as a fibrous raw material for paper production. Its fibres are comparable to softwood in terms of length and strength, making bamboo a suitable resource for manufacturing paper pulp.
The manufacturing process involves preparing bamboo through shredding, washing, and wet depithing, followed by chemical digestion to separate the fibres. Pulp screening, beating, and bleaching may be carried out according to the quality requirements of the final product. Bleaching improves pulp whiteness and purity, while the degree of treatment influences fibre strength and the suitability of the pulp for different paper grades. Mills can produce bleached, semi-bleached, and unbleached pulp to meet diverse applications.
Although wood remains a major source of papermaking fibres in North America, agricultural residues such as bagasse, rice husk, wheat husk, jute sticks, and grasses are also being explored as alternative raw materials. Bamboo pulp can be blended with fibres from other sources to support paper quality and production requirements. The report notes that the international paper pulp commodity market is well established and that domestic prices in Australia broadly follow global price cycles. It cites indicative bleached pulp costs of $700–$1,000 per tonne and emphasizes that the commercial viability of a pulping plant depends on its ability to produce economically during periods of low market prices.
