Industry Overview
Brooms have been used for centuries in homes and workplaces and are manufactured from both natural and man-made materials. While plastic and metal are commonly used in manufactured brooms, natural-material brooms may use stiff grasses such as broomcorn and sotol fiber. Broomcom brooms have been produced for at least 200 years and are regarded as premium natural-bristle brooms because their stalks are durable and moisture-resistant.
Broomcom is a variety of sorghum, identified in the report as Sorghum vulgare or S. bicolor variety technicum, belonging to the Gramineae family. It is cultivated for its stiff stems, from which broom bristles are obtained after the tasseled branches are harvested and dried. The seeds are edible, starchy and rich in carbohydrates, with potential uses in cereals and animal feed. The stalks used for broom manufacture can grow 2-8 ft (0.61-2.4 m) tall, while sorghum is valued for its drought resistance, particularly in hot and arid climates.
Mexico grows and processes much of the broomcom and sotol fiber used in American broom production. Sotol, a yucca fiber, may be incorporated into the inner portion of brooms and covered with broomcom, helping reduce the cost of natural-bristle products.
