Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is one of the most abundant naturally occurring compounds on Earth and forms a significant component of the Earth’s crust. It is found in various mineral forms such as limestone, marble, travertine, and chalk, and also occurs in combination with magnesium as dolomite. Naturally occurring calcium carbonate is present in biological materials including coral, seashells, eggshells, and pearls.
Calcium carbonate exists mainly in two crystalline forms: calcite and aragonite, which differ in their geometric arrangement of calcium and carbonate ions. In its pure form, it is a white powder with distinct physical properties and decomposes upon heating into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. It also reacts with acids, releasing carbon dioxide gas.
Large calcium carbonate deposits were formed millions of years ago through marine biological processes. Sea organisms used dissolved calcium ions and carbon dioxide to create shells and skeletons, which accumulated on ocean floors after their life cycles ended. Over time, these deposits were compressed into extensive limestone formations. These natural resources serve as important raw materials for industrial applications, including calcium carbonate filler masterbatch production and related polymer processing industries.
