Crumb rubber is a recycled rubber material produced by reducing scrap tires and other rubber waste into uniform granules while removing reinforcing materials such as steel and fiber, along with inert contaminants like dust, glass, and rock. It is primarily manufactured from tire buffings generated during tire retreading and scrap tire rubber obtained from passenger car, truck, and off-the-road tires.
A typical scrap tire contains recoverable rubber, steel, fiber, and other extraneous materials. Through controlled processing methods involving grinding, heat, chemical agents, and mechanical working, vulcanized rubber can be converted into a refined form suitable for further compounding and processing. Crumb rubber offers consistent quality and controlled properties compared with conventional sheet and crepe rubber grades.
The material has gained acceptance among rubber product manufacturers, particularly tire manufacturers, due to its uniform characteristics, reduced dirt content, and suitability as a substitute or supplement for synthetic and conventional rubber materials.
