Dolomite is a carbonate mineral composed primarily of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate, with smaller amounts of other minerals. It is also the principal mineral component of dolostone and occurs in forms such as dolomitic limestone and dolomitic marble. Dolomite crystals may be pinkish, white, buff-coloured or bluish, and can range from transparent and translucent to opaque.
Dolomite has applications across agriculture, construction and several industrial sectors. In agriculture, dolomite or dolomitic limestone is used to help adjust soil pH while supplying calcium and magnesium nutrients. A typical dolomite mixture may contain approximately 8–12% magnesium and 18–22% calcium, as stated in the report. Its use requires consideration of mineral composition, including sodium content, because excessive salinity can adversely affect plants.
