Direct dyes are widely used for printing and dyeing cotton and other cellulosic fabrics through direct and discharge printing methods. Their principal limitation is generally poor fastness to washing and soaping, which can cause staining or tinting of unprinted areas and make it difficult to achieve a clean white background. Cationic surface-active dye fixing agents improve wet fastness by forming less-soluble complexes with anionic dye molecules.
