Formaldehyde is an important industrial chemical with applications across multiple sectors. Commercial production of formaldehyde began in Germany during the 1880s, while the development of methanol synthesis technology in the 1920s supported the growth of large-scale manufacturing. Today, formaldehyde is primarily produced through two major processes: oxidation-dehydrogenation of methanol using a silver catalyst and direct oxidation of methanol using metal oxide catalysts, commonly known as the Formox process.
In the silver catalyst process, vaporized methanol mixed with air and steam passes over a silver catalyst bed at high temperature, producing formaldehyde through methanol dehydrogenation. The Formox process uses molybdenum and iron oxide catalysts, operating at a lower temperature through an exothermic oxidation reaction that generates heat for steam production and process requirements. Advanced versions of the Formox technology offer improved conversion efficiency and higher formaldehyde concentration production capabilities.
Both production routes achieve yields of approximately 90% to 92%. While oxidation-based technology benefits from lower reaction temperatures and lower catalyst costs, silver catalyst technology remains widely used in industrial formaldehyde production. Formaldehyde continues to be a key raw material for resins, construction materials, chemicals, and various industrial applications.
