Granite is a durable natural stone widely used in construction, architecture, interior and exterior decoration, landscaping, and monuments. Geologically, granite is a coarse-grained igneous rock composed primarily of feldspars and quartz, along with smaller quantities of minerals such as biotite, hornblende, pyroxene, and iron oxides. In commercial dimension-stone terminology, however, granite encompasses a broader range of crystalline rocks with visible, interlocking crystals, attractive colors, and the strength required for quarrying, cutting, and polishing.
Commercial granite includes rocks such as anorthosite, gneiss, granodiorite, monzonite, syenite, and gabbro. Its resistance to wear and weathering, high compressive strength, durability, and ability to achieve a mirror-like polish make it a preferred material for both structural and decorative applications. Granite is commonly used for building facades, countertops, floor tiles, stair treads, monuments, and landscaping features. Polished granite slabs and tiles are particularly valued in interior design for their appearance, longevity, and ability to create an impression of elegance and quality.
Granite is generally massive, hard, and tough, making it suitable for demanding construction applications. Its average density ranges from 2.65 to 2.75 g/cm³. Commercial granite production involves activities such as prospecting, mining, quarrying, cutting, and polishing, supported by specialized machinery and equipment. Proper environmental management during prospecting and mining is also important for responsible project implementation.
