Seamless steel cylinders are the gold standard for high-pressure gas storage and transportation. Unlike welded cylinders, which are formed by bending a steel plate and joining the edges, seamless cylinders are manufactured from a single solid billet of steel through processes like hot piercing or cold drawing.
This "monolithic" construction eliminates the longitudinal weld seam—traditionally the weakest point of any pressurized vessel—allowing the cylinder to withstand significantly higher internal pressures.
Key Properties
The superior performance of seamless cylinders is derived from their metallurgical and structural uniformity.
• High Tensile Strength: Manufactured from high-grade carbon steel or chromium-molybdenum (Cr-Mo) alloys, they can safely contain gases at working pressures typically ranging from 150 bar to 300 bar, and even higher for specialized applications.
• Uniform Wall Thickness: The precision manufacturing process ensures that the wall thickness is consistent throughout the body. This prevents "hot spots" or localized stress concentrations that could lead to premature failure.
• Superior Grain Structure: The heating and mechanical working (forging/rolling) involved in the seamless process refines the grain structure of the steel, enhancing its toughness and resistance to fatigue.
• Corrosion Resistance: Depending on the alloy used (such as 316L stainless steel), these cylinders offer high resistance to both atmospheric rust and internal chemical "attack" from corrosive gases.
