Hydroponics is an advanced method of crop cultivation in which plants are grown without soil by supplying essential nutrients through a nutrient-enriched water solution. The term "Hydroponics" was introduced by Dr. W.F. Gericke in 1936 to describe the cultivation of edible and ornamental plants using water and dissolved nutrients. Derived from the Greek words "Hydro" meaning water and "Ponos" meaning labor, hydroponics focuses on delivering nutrients directly to plant roots through controlled systems.
In hydroponic farming, plants are supported using inert growing media such as clay, sand, rock wool, or coco coir, while nutrient solutions are circulated through gravity-based or pump-operated systems. These systems can improve plant growth by reducing soil-borne diseases and ensuring consistent access to water and nutrients. Hydroponic plants are commonly cultivated in trays, vertical systems, and controlled environments to achieve efficient production.
Crops such as lettuce, tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, squash, melons, and leeks are suitable for hydroponic cultivation due to their growth characteristics. With proper monitoring, pruning, and environmental control, hydroponic farming provides opportunities for higher productivity, efficient resource utilization, and year-round cultivation.
