     The word IV fluids conjure up visions of patients faced with  life  threatening conditions, surgeries or emergencies. In a  way 

association  is right. It is therefore a necessity to  understand  that  when  confronted  with life or death  situation,  the  only 

determinig  factor  to choose the right IV fluid in  the  highest  quality  standard  which  goes  with  the  type  and  process  of 

manufacture  of IV sets. High standards of manufacturing  process  are  to maintained in order to avoid the state of  industry  when 

the  health  care system was rocked by a series of  tragedies  in  well known health institutions.

     In  processing  modern drug delivery  systems  Infusion  and  Transfusion sets are very important.  It may be recalled that  it 

were  perhaps  the mosquito and the snake bites  which  made  man  conscious  of the fact that substances could be removed  from  or put into the system through the skin puncture.  The discovery  of  blood   circulation   by  Harvey  in  1616  must   have   further 

strengthened these observations.  The first break through came in 1665 when Christopher when injected opium into the vein of a  dog 

and  put  him  to sleep successfully.  Some  British  and  French surgeons began subcutaneous administration in the  mid-nineteenth 

century  and  by 1860 this mode of administration  of  drugs  got established to a certain extent.  The last one hundred years have 

pushed ahead the knowledge of parenteral therapy in a big way  so much  so that on an average 25% of all drugs administered in  the 

hospitals  these days are in the injectable forms  common  routes for injection of fluids in the body are:

     a)   Intradirmal (intracutancous)

     b)   Hyperdermic (subcutaneous)

     c)   Intramuscular

     d)   Intravenous

     e)   Intra arterial

     f)   Intrathecal

     g)   Intra cisternal

     h)   Peridural

     i)   Intra cardiac

     j)   Intra articular

     k)   Intra synovial

     l)   Intra cameral

     The parenteral administration offers a number of  advantages over other dosage forms.  The immediate availability of the  drug 

to  the  system and successful administration of drugs  sensitive to  the  digestive system are the most  significant  gains.   The 

transfusion equipments is used to transfuse human blood and  its derivatives  of  other  infusion fluids  in  medical  operations.  

Infusion  sets  administer & are not provided with  filter.   The transfusion   set  is  used  for  blood  transfusion   and   does 

necessarily contain adequate filter for additional safe  transfer of blood to the patient.

     Logically,   a  glass  container  can  never  be  a   single component,  sealed unit, because a rubber seal and  an  aluminium 

cap also add to the container material. Rubber has been known  to exhibit  a  property termed as coring  which  releases  particles 

during  the  administration procedure into the  solution  thereby increasing contamination.
