Brooms have been used for centuries in homes and workplaces and are manufactured from both natural and man-made materials. Traditional broomcom brooms use stiff grasses derived from sorghum, particularly Sorghum vulgare or S. bicolor variety technicum. The dried tasseled stalks are used as broom bristles, while sorghum is also valued for its drought resistance and applications in human consumption and animal feed. Broomcom brooms have a long history of craft production, with manufacturing methods remaining largely manual even though modern machinery is electrically powered.
