Traditional leather board manufacturing involves extracting fibres from shavings and other solid waste, treating them with chemicals and binders, forming a slurry, and drying the resulting fibre sheet. However, conventional leather board products are generally limited to low-value applications such as insoles, midsoles, and reinforcement materials due to their moderate physical and chemical properties.
Alternative approaches include the preparation of parchment-like materials, leather-like materials, glue, gelatin, and blended fabrics from chrome shavings. While some methods have restricted applications and limited product value, leather fibre-based blended fabrics offer improved mechanical and physicochemical properties. By extracting leather fibres and combining them with natural or synthetic fibres, composite fabrics suitable for leather and textile applications can be produced. This approach provides an energy-efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective method for recycling leather waste, with significant potential for sustainable material development.
