Lithium polymer batteries, more accurately known as lithium-ion polymer batteries (LiPo, LIP, Li-poly, and similar abbreviations), are rechargeable lithium-ion technology batteries that use a polymer-based electrolyte instead of a conventional liquid electrolyte. The electrolyte consists of high-conductivity semisolid gel polymers, enabling these batteries to provide high specific energy and reduced weight compared with several other lithium battery technologies.
LiPo batteries are widely used in applications where lightweight design and compact form factors are essential, including mobile devices, radio-controlled aircraft, and selected electric vehicle applications. The technology uses similar cathode, anode, and electrolyte materials as conventional lithium-ion batteries, but the polymer additive creates a gelled electrolyte structure that allows thinner and more flexible designs.
Li-polymer cells, commonly known as soft or pouch cells, are manufactured using thin aluminum foil-based housings. These cells can be produced in various shapes and sizes, including large formats and ultra-thin designs below 1 mm thickness. Their lightweight construction and manufacturing flexibility make them suitable for modern energy storage applications. However, pouch cells require careful mechanical handling due to their soft structure and sensitivity to physical damage.
