Dyestuff is a broad industry term covering dyes and pigments, which differ in their chemistry, applications, solubility, reactions, and properties. Dyes are intensely coloured organic compounds or mixtures used to impart permanent colour to substrates such as textiles, paper, leather, and plastics. A dye is generally applied in an aqueous solution and may require a mordant to improve colour fastness on fibres. Pigments, in contrast, are insoluble and are important inputs for products such as paints.
Dye intermediates are the principal raw materials used in dyestuff manufacturing. The production chain can be traced to petroleum-based products, with naphtha and natural gas used in the production of benzene and toluene. These are subsequently used to manufacture nitro-aromatics, which form the basis for producing dye intermediates. The conversion from nitro-aromatics to dye intermediates therefore represents an important stage of the dyes and dye intermediates sector.
