Ferro vanadium is an alloy of iron and vanadium, typically containing 35%–85% vanadium. It is widely used as a hardening, strengthening, and corrosion-resistance additive in steel production, particularly for high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels, tool steels, and other ferrous products. First used in the production of the Ford Model T, ferro vanadium continues to play an important role in the automotive industry and various engineering applications.
The addition of vanadium improves the hardness, tensile strength, wear resistance, and machining characteristics of steel. Ferro vanadium also contributes to the performance of alloys exposed to demanding chemical and operating environments. Small quantities of vanadium can improve the properties and welding characteristics of certain steels, while higher concentrations, particularly in combination with chromium and tungsten, are used in high-speed tool steels that retain hardness over a moderate temperature range.
Vanadium-alloyed steels are used in general engineering, high-pressure boilers, locomotive components, gears, turbines, and other applications requiring strength and durability. The broader ferro-alloy industry also includes ferro molybdenum, ferro titanium, ferro boron, vanadium pentoxide, and ammonium metavanadate. Their production involves specialized raw materials, thermal and chemical processing, quality control, and environmental management. A ferro-alloy project therefore requires consideration of manufacturing technology, raw material availability, plant and machinery, market demand, and applicable industrial and environmental requirements.
