Organic coatings are composed of pigments suspended in a vehicle or carrier consisting primarily of resins, driers, plasticizers, and stabilizers as required. During drying, the vehicle changes from a liquid to a solid film through mechanisms such as solvent evaporation, oxidation of drying oils, or polymerization induced by heat, catalysts, or reactive components. Pigments provide important functional properties, including inhibition of metal-surface corrosion, film reinforcement, resistance to sunlight deterioration, controlled chalking, and colour development. Inorganic coatings, such as zinc silicates, may similarly be considered pigments suspended in a vehicle, with metallic zinc dust combined with water-soluble silicates.
