Pig rearing can be paying if sufficient attention is given to the selection of good quality stock and to the proper management of herd. If pigs are fed the scientific way, they will be ready for the market and your table in a short period of six to eight months. Where as a desi pig, left to fend for itself , will take two to three years to attain the market weight of 100 kgs, an improved breed, given the proper feed, will attain the same weight in one-sixth of the time.
The seasonal cropping system and labour requirements leave periods with many farmers, when they could more profitably engage them selves in a subsidiary occupation to supplement their income. Where there is a steady and reliable demand for pork in the neighbourhood, pig rearing comes as a useful adjunct and can be a paying subsidiary occupation.
The village pig is allowed to pick up whatever food it can find from refuseheaps or harvested fields. It cannot get the nutrition it needs from these sources and grow healthy. By proper management and feeding , this could be reduced to almost 12 months in the case of desi type of pigs.
If improved breeds of pig are used it would be possible to reach market weight of 80 kgs in eight months under good conditions of management and feeding. The improved breeds are prolific breeders, farrowing 10-12 piglets at a time and capable of producing two litters per year. The carcass return in the
case of these breeds is quite high yielding 65 to 80 per cent of their weight compared to the carcass return of 45 to 50 percent in the case of desi pigs.
