Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) is an advanced industrial mineral product derived from lime and is widely used across multiple industries due to its high purity, controlled particle size, and customizable crystal morphology. PCC is produced by hydrating high-calcium quicklime and reacting the resulting milk-of-lime slurry with carbon dioxide, resulting in a highly white product with a uniform particle size distribution.
PCC, also known as purified, refined, or synthetic calcium carbonate, has the same chemical composition as naturally occurring calcium carbonate minerals such as limestone, marble, and chalk. Due to its purity and controlled characteristics, PCC is used in paper, plastics, rubber, paints, pharmaceuticals, food-related applications, and other specialized industries.
The key advantage of PCC is its ability to be engineered with specific particle sizes, morphologies, and surface characteristics to meet application requirements. It is valued in paint production for properties such as brightness, weather resistance, low abrasiveness, non-toxicity, and pH stabilization. PCC is generally produced from high-purity limestone deposits formed from ancient marine calcium carbonate materials that have undergone geological transformation over millions of years.
Through controlled processing techniques, PCC purity can be enhanced up to 99.9% or 99.999%, while particle sizes can be tailored from submicron levels to more than 10 microns, making it a preferred functional filler for various industrial applications.
