Calcium carbonate is commercially manufactured mainly in two forms: Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) and Activated Calcium Carbonate. The principal difference is that activated calcium carbonate has a coating, whereas precipitated calcium carbonate does not. Both forms are widely used as fillers or extenders in industries including PVC, rubber, dentifrices, cigarette paper, printing inks, pharmaceuticals, paints, plastics, paper, cosmetics, and adhesives.
Precipitated calcium carbonate can be produced in different grades with controlled particle size, shape, distribution, bulk density, flow point, and viscosity according to customer requirements. The manufacturing process begins with high-grade limestone containing more than 90% CaO, which is calcined in a coal-fired lime kiln to produce quicklime. The quicklime is hydrated to form lime slurry, purified, and carbonated using carbon dioxide. The resulting calcium carbonate slurry is filtered, dried, pulverized, tested, and packed for marketing.
The proposed unit is based on producing precipitated calcium carbonate using lime slurry and carbon dioxide from a CO2 plant. The process also incorporates filtration and drying systems for producing a quality product, while activated calcium carbonate can be manufactured with suitable coating arrangements.

Precipitated calcium carbonate is a commercially manufactured form of calcium carbonate produced through a chemical process. Unlike naturally occurring calcium carbonate minerals such as limestone, marble, and calcite, PCC is produced by reacting calcium hydroxide with carbon dioxide to form calcium carbonate. The process allows manufacturers to control properties such as particle size, shape, distribution, bulk density, and other characteristics. These controlled properties make PCC suitable for specialized applications in plastics, paints, paper, rubber, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food, inks, adhesives, and other industries.
Precipitated calcium carbonate is generally manufactured by calcining limestone, hydrating the resulting quicklime, and carbonating the lime slurry. High-grade limestone is first converted into quicklime in a lime kiln. The quicklime is then mixed with water to produce calcium hydroxide slurry, which is purified to remove impurities. Carbon dioxide is introduced into the slurry under controlled conditions, producing calcium carbonate. The resulting slurry is filtered to obtain a wet cake, which is subsequently dried and pulverized to achieve the required product characteristics before testing and packing.
Precipitated calcium carbonate and activated calcium carbonate differ primarily in surface treatment and resulting performance characteristics. Precipitated calcium carbonate is produced chemically and generally does not have a coating, while activated calcium carbonate is treated with a coating material to modify its surface properties. Activation can improve compatibility, dispersion, processing behavior, or interaction with particular materials. Both products can function as fillers or extenders, but the appropriate grade depends on the intended application and the physical and performance properties required by the customer.
Calcium carbonate is widely used as a filler, extender, functional ingredient, or processing aid across many industries. Major applications include plastics, rubber, paints and surface coatings, paper, printing inks, cosmetics and toothpaste, food and pharmaceuticals, putty, caulks, sealants, ceramics, polishes, insecticides, adhesives, matches, linoleum, and welding rods. The selected grade depends on requirements such as particle size, particle shape, purity, surface characteristics, bulk density, and application-specific performance.
Limestone is the principal mineral raw material used for producing precipitated calcium carbonate. The limestone is calcined to produce quicklime, which is subsequently hydrated with water to form calcium hydroxide slurry. Carbon dioxide is then introduced into the slurry during carbonation to produce calcium carbonate. The quality and composition of the limestone can influence the quality of the quicklime and downstream product. The report specifically describes the use of high-grade limestone containing more than 90% CaO for the proposed manufacturing process.
Filtration and drying are important because carbonation produces calcium carbonate as a slurry containing water. Filtration separates the solid calcium carbonate from the liquid phase and produces a wet cake. The filtered water can be recycled for preparing lime slurry, supporting efficient process operation. Drying removes the remaining moisture from the calcium carbonate cake, after which pulverization can produce the required particle form or mesh. Proper control of these stages contributes to consistent product quality, handling characteristics, and suitability for downstream applications.
