INTRODUCTION
Fertilizers are substances which are introduced into the oil to increase the yields of agricultural crops. In addition to increasing the amount of agricultural produce, fertilizers also improve their quality. Thus with the use of fertilizes the starch, sugar, protein and oil content of plant is raised, this in turn increases the contents of fats and proteins in livestock's products. The use of fertilizers increases the strength of such products as flax, cotton, and wool. Fertilizers increase the resistance of plants to disease, drought, low temperatures and other conditions which hinder the development of plants.
Fertilizers are broadly classified in two types. (1) organic eg. manure etc and (2) Inorganic eg. Calcium Ammonium Nitrate, Super phosphate etc. Inorganic fertilizers are salts which contain elements essential for plant growth and which are introduced into the soil to obtain large crops regularly. About 60 of the elements are found in composition of the various plants. Primarily, carbon, oxygen and hydrogen, which make up the principal part of plant matter, and also nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium, sulphur, calcium end iron are utilized in formation of plant tissues and are necessary for normal growth and development of plants.
Inorganic fertilizers are further classified according to the role they play in soil chemistry, the number and types of nutrients elements they contain, their physiocohemical properties and in particular, their solubility in soil water, their physiological effect on the soil to which the fertilizer is applied, method used for manufacturing them etc. They are classified as direct or indirect fertilizers according to their agrochemical nature. Direct fertilizers contain the nutrient elements in the form of compounds which are directly assinilated by plants. Indirect fertilizers are substances which are introduced to the soil mainly to improce its mechanics, chemical or biological properties.
