Soda ash, also known as sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), is an important inorganic chemical compound widely used in various industrial applications. It is commonly referred to as washing soda or soda crystals and exists as a white, odourless solid under standard conditions. Soda ash is water-soluble and forms mildly alkaline solutions when dissolved in water. Historically, it was obtained by burning sodium-rich plants and collecting the resulting ashes, which led to its common name.
Modern soda ash production is primarily carried out through established chemical processes such as the Leblanc process, Dual process, Solvay process, and Electrolytic process. Among these, the Solvay process is widely adopted for industrial preparation, where ammonia and carbon dioxide react with a saturated sodium chloride solution to produce sodium hydrogen carbonate, which is subsequently processed to obtain soda ash.
Soda ash has significant industrial importance due to its applications in water treatment, glass manufacturing, detergent production, and other chemical processes. Its properties as an alkaline compound make it suitable for multiple manufacturing and processing industries.
