Cold rolling is a work hardening process used to modify the structure and properties of metals, particularly stainless steel. Cold rolled stainless steel is widely used as a raw material in industries such as medical equipment, aerospace engineering, and automotive manufacturing due to its improved surface quality, dimensional accuracy, and mechanical properties.
The primary purpose of cold rolling is to reduce the thickness of hot rolled steel strips, generally ranging from 1.5 mm to 5 mm, into thinner gauges typically between 0.12 mm and 2.5 mm. This process also enhances surface finish, thickness tolerances, shape control, and provides different tempers required for specialized applications.
Cold rolled steel products offer improved control over thickness, width, surface finish, and other quality characteristics required by advanced engineering applications. Through metallurgical design, cold rolled sheets can achieve specific attributes including high formability, deep drawability, strength, dent resistance, weldability, enamelability, paintability, and magnetic properties.
Cold rolling is performed below the recrystallization temperature, generally at room temperature. Although external heating is not applied before rolling, frictional energy generated between the strip and rolls converts into heat, which may increase strip temperatures during rapid processing.
