PRINTED TIN CONTAINERS
[EIRI/EDPR/7344] (J.C.4782)
The 15 - kgs tins are fabricated in rectangular shape of 10" x 10" base and 14" height. A 41" x 14-1/4" tin plate is formed at three points to make a 90o angle between consecutive sides. A seam welding all over the length of the container are further covered with separate square pieces of tin plate. The top & bottom ends of the container are joined mechanically by flaring & pressing the edges of container's walls & covers plates in such a fashion that it gives an air-tight joint at both ends. An opening is made on the top of the container for filling & withdrawal of the contents when required. Also suitable handles are fitted on each container. The container is internally sterilized & dried completely before filling the substances into the containers. The openings made on the top of the container are properly sealed after packing in order contaminated by exposure to the atmosphere. The contents carefully packed in such tin contents can be kept without deterioration for a pretty long time. It is clear now that tin used in various industrial applications is nothing but cast or wrought form of low carbon steel, rolled into sheet/strip of 0.15 - 0.25 mm. This is aneconomical material and contains for packaging can be formed & fabricated out of it with a very little consumption of power. 49 x 106 joules of energy is found sufficient to process 1.00 MT. of tin plates into 16,500 pcs of containers. This is the lowest power consumption level when compared with aluminium cans, bimetallic cans & glass bottles mfg. demands of energy consumption. Even after the disposal of these tin containers, the costly tin metal used as coating and bulk of steel sheet can be separated out, by various de-tinning processes, for re-use in various ways.
The whole aspects thus suggest that tin plate is probably the best known material for mfg. packaging containers which has every requisite properties of a packaging material, besides its in expansiveness, durability & residual values. That is why tin containers are continuing to occupy a prestigious place as packaging material despite a stiff competition from new generation materials.
