Viscoelastics, also known as ophthalmic viscosurgical devices (OVDs), are specialized solutions used extensively in ophthalmic procedures due to their unique dual properties. They exhibit the viscous characteristics of fluids along with the elastic behavior of gels or solids, and may also demonstrate pseudoplastic properties. These materials play an important role in maintaining surgical space, protecting tissues, and facilitating various ophthalmic interventions.
Viscoelastics are widely utilized in cataract surgery for procedures such as capsulotomy and nucleus manipulation, as well as in corneal surgeries, glaucoma procedures, open globe repairs, retinal surgeries, pediatric ophthalmology, and strabismus surgeries. They are classified based on their source and rheological characteristics, including properties such as viscosity, cohesiveness, dispersiveness, and viscoadaptability. While highly beneficial in ophthalmic applications, their use may be associated with complications such as secondary glaucoma, capsular block syndrome, capsular bag distension syndrome, pseudo anterior uveitis, intraocular lens crystallization, and calcific band keratopathy.
