Industry Overview
An anganwadi, meaning a “courtyard shelter” in India, is a community-based childcare and development centre introduced by the Indian government in 1975 to address child malnutrition and support early childhood development. Anganwadis provide nutritious meals, health and hygiene education, preschool learning, immunisation support, and basic healthcare services for children below six years of age. They also serve as important community centres supporting women and children through nutrition and healthcare initiatives.
In 2019, the SMEC Foundation funded the construction of Harivillu 2, a rural anganwadi located in Ammavaripeta Village, Andhra Pradesh. The project was initiated to address the needs of an overcrowded existing anganwadi serving disadvantaged children in the village. With a population of approximately 1,500 people, Ammavaripeta was selected due to the increasing demand for accessible early childhood education and support services.
Harivillu 2 was planned to accommodate children between two and six years of age, providing facilities for nutrition, preschool education, immunisation, medical support, and assistance for women requiring pre and post-natal care. Community engagement, site analysis, and concept design began in late 2019, followed by construction activities in early 2020 with support from volunteer architects and the local community.
