Industry Overview
Investment casting, also known as lost wax casting, is one of the oldest metal forming processes and has been used for thousands of years to produce detailed and intricate metal components. Historically, the process was used by the Egyptians approximately 5000 years ago for creating gold jewelry using precisely formed beeswax patterns.
Modern investment casting involves coating a disposable pattern, generally made from wax, with a ceramic slurry to create a hardened mold. The wax pattern is removed by melting, leaving behind a ceramic mold into which molten metal is poured. After casting, the ceramic mold is broken to recover the finished component.
The ceramic shell process has become the preferred method for engineering applications due to its ability to manufacture complex-shaped, near-net-shape castings in a wide range of alloys. Continuous improvements in materials, process techniques, and research activities have supported advancements in investment casting technology. Research conducted by industrial organizations and academic institutions has contributed to improved gating and feeding systems, helping manufacturers produce sound and high-quality castings.
