Industry Overview
Crude oil, also known as petroleum, is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons composed primarily of carbon and hydrogen. It occurs naturally as a liquid within the earth’s crust and varies in composition, color, and viscosity depending on its source. Crude oil is believed to have originated from the remains of microscopic marine organisms deposited on the seabed, which transformed over geological periods under high temperature and pressure into petroleum and natural gas.
Petroleum is extracted by drilling into reservoir rocks such as sandstone and limestone, where oil and gas accumulate beneath impermeable rock formations. Crude oil is refined through various conversion and separation processes to produce valuable petroleum products. Since gasoline demand exceeds the natural gasoline content of crude oil, refining processes such as cracking, reforming, and polymerization are used to increase gasoline production.
Petroleum products are generally classified into light distillates, middle distillates, and heavy distillates and residues. These categories include products such as LPG, gasoline, naphtha, kerosene, diesel, heavy fuel oil, lubricating oil, wax, and asphalt. The classification is based on the distillation and separation of crude oil into different fractions, each serving specific industrial and commercial applications.
