Rolling mill products used as structural steel members are classified as sections or shapes based on their cross-sectional profiles. Standard sections are commonly produced due to their consistent demand, while special sections are manufactured only when required quantities justify dedicated rolling arrangements.
Standard channel sections are widely used in structural applications and generally require lateral support due to their tendency to buckle. They are suitable for build-up sections, framing around floor openings, spandrels, and lintels. Cold roll formed steel sections are extensively used in factory sheds, godowns, steel racks, transmission-line towers, automobile vehicles, railway coaches, pollution treatment equipment, conveyors, electrical equipment, rolling shutters, and various industrial structures.
Cold roll forming provides high-strength steel characteristics, resulting in material savings in fabricated structures compared with conventional hot rolled sections. The growing adoption of pre-engineered buildings (PEB) has further increased demand due to their flexibility, shorter construction time, cost efficiency, and adaptability for commercial, industrial, and infrastructure projects.
