The products of the rolling mills used as structural steel members are known as sections or shapes and are designated by the shapes of their cross sections. The regular sections are those for which there is a constant demand and are the most commonly used.
The special sections are those that are required less frequently and consequently are rolled only by special arrangement. The choice of special sections should be avoided unless the quantity is large enough to warrant a rolling.
A standard channel section is identified thus : 10 15.3, indicating that the channel has a 10 inch depth weight 15.3 1b. per lnch. Lime the standard I Beam, the depth for a particular group remains constant, whereas the cross-sectional area is increased by spreading the rollers. Thus increasing the flange width and web thickness in equal amounts.
Owing to their tendency to buckle, channels require lateral support. They are generally used as elements of build-up sections, such as column and lintered. The absence of the flange on one side of the channel section makes them particularly suitable for framing around floor openings spandrels and lintels.
