Industry Overview
Interlocking Concrete Block Pavement (ICBP) is a specialized pavement construction technique widely used in areas where conventional pavement systems face durability, operational, geological, traffic, or environmental limitations. The technology was introduced in India for specific applications such as footpaths and parking areas and has gradually expanded to various construction requirements where hot bituminous mix or cement concrete pavement systems are less suitable.
Concrete paver blocks were first developed in Holland during the 1950s as an alternative to scarce paver bricks after the post-war construction boom. Over time, block designs evolved from non-interlocking forms to partially, fully, and multiply interlocking shapes, leading to the development of modern Interlocking Concrete Block Pavement systems.
ICBP consists of small-element, solid, unreinforced precast concrete paver blocks placed over compacted bedding material, a properly prepared base course, and edge restraints. Suitable joint filling materials provide stability and durability. Properly designed and constructed concrete block pavements deliver reliable performance for light, medium, heavy, and very heavy traffic applications across various operating conditions.
